Pediatric Dentistry at Rushmore Dental
Here at Rushmore Dental in Rapid City, your pediatric dentistry, we teach your children the proper way to take care of their teeth and that going to the dentist can be fun. We want to provide the best pediatric experience possible. An experience that is calm and inviting. Many parents choose to have our dentists treat their children because of their ability to deal with all types of child behavior and special needs.
Infant Dentistry
As soon as teeth appear, they are vulnerable to the possibility of cavities. It’s crucial to keep baby teeth healthy so that the child can chew effectively, speak clearly, and feel comfortable, and baby teeth also hold the places for the adult teeth to grow in after them. Dental professionals like our doctors will help you keep your baby’s teeth healthy and happy.
Interceptive Orthodontics
Certain issues with the bite, dental alignment, and facial development can start to appear long before the last few adult teeth show up. This is where interceptive orthodontics can make a big difference, by correcting these problems early on — which also makes future orthodontic treatment (or phase 2) much faster and easier, and sometimes it is no longer necessary!
Laser Therapy
Laser dental care is among pediatric dentistry’s most recent and beneficial breakthroughs, and it is especially beneficial for a pediatric dentistry. At Rushmore Dental, laser therapy is used to treat soft tissue conditions, such as lip and tongue ties. Laser treatment is minimally invasive and, unlike treatment with a traditional scalpel, it usually does not require local anesthetic. This is particularly helpful to the infants we treat in our office.
Lip & Tongue Tie Release
Laser frenectomies can happen as early as a couple of days after birth up into adulthood. The sooner a problem with tongue or lip tie has been discovered and addressed, the better the procedure will work and the fewer issues the child will have.
Nitrous Oxide for Children
Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas commonly referred to as laughing gas. It consists of two nitrogen atoms and one oxygen atom bonded together. Studies indicate that it reduces a patient’s perception of pain and increases the release of dopamine. Laughing gas is one option to help anxious patients relax and feel comfortable during a dental procedure, or even during a routine pediatric dental appointment.
Oral Sedation
As the name suggests, oral sedation does not require the use of needles but a sedative taken in pill form. Depending on the dosage, it can induce low or moderate sedation. With moderate sedation, you won’t remember much of the procedure even though you’re conscious.
Pit and Fissure Sealant
Typically, sealants are applied to the molars because these teeth are the ones that do the most chewing and have those deep crevices where bacteria can hide. The sealant will fill in and cover any crevices on the tooth to act as a shield from the bacteria. What makes them even better is that the sealant application process is quick and painless!
Silver Diamine Fluoride
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a compound that helps fight tooth decay in children who are especially vulnerable to it. SDF is applied quickly and painlessly during a regular dental visit.
Space Maintainer
If a child loses a baby tooth earlier than expected or their adult tooth is late in erupting, they may benefit from space maintainers to hold the place for the incoming tooth or teeth. Space maintainers are orthodontic appliances that help ensure that adult teeth come in where they should. They can be fixed or removable and they are custom-made for each child.
